Camp G.R.A.C.E. is a day camp designed for children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other special needs. Each session of Camp G.R.A.C.E. operates for one week, with each session focusing on building specific skills incorporating therapeutic ideas from many disciplines. We offer two different sessions: Social Skills and Building Blocks. Social Skills Sessions are designed for children that do not require one-on-one assistance. The focus of these sessions will be on activity skill building, teamwork activities, and social situations. The Building Blocks sessions are designed with a smaller ratio to allow for more individual attention. Throughout their camp session, children will work and play within their huddles to learn new games, complete art projects, participate in music and dog therapy times, and much more. Children will also get to enjoy water activities and sensory integration activities, as well as character and social skills development time. Individuals from the following organizations donated their time and expertise in the formation of Camp G.R.A.C.E.: The YMCA of the Triangle, A Small Miracle, LLC., the Autism Society of North Carolina, Community Partnerships, Maxim Home Health, and independently contracted behavioral psychologists. It is through the generosity and dedication of all of the above-mentioned organizations and donors to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign that we are able to provide Camp G.R.A.C.E. Volunteers will assist staff in the camp's daily activities and upholding YMCA values. Please note: Attending the staff training is strongly recommended and all interviews conducted by the camp director

Swim for Life offers free swim lessons for children and adults based on income qualifications. The Program is funded through the YMCA’s Annual Campaign and a grant from Delta Airlines. Help teach the basic life skill of swimming. Under the instruction and guidance of swim lesson instructor staff, volunteers will help new swimmers learn to swim and manage swimmers as they take turns in the water. In order to provide continuity for swimmers, volunteer instructors are asked to attend all sessions over the three week period. Volunteers should be confident swimmers themselves. YMCA youth swim lessons emphasize water safety, skill and stroke development and are offered year-round for swimmers ages 6 - 12 of all skill levels. YMCA swim lessons emphasize water safety, skill and stroke development. Beginning swimmers are introduced to basic stroke movement and learn how to be more comfortable in the water. More advanced swimmers are instructed in stroke technique, endurance and safety skills. YMCA swim lessons have a low child-to-instructor ratio to ensure plenty of time in the water. Swim lessons and classes are available during the week and on weekends. Parents are welcome to watch lessons from the pool deck. Volunteers are utilized as an extra safety measure during the lessons. This allows the instructor to focus solely on one child at a time while the volunteer maintains safety and boundaries with the remainder of the class on the wall. This includes singing songs with the swimmers, playing games, and generally distracting them between turns.
