In response to growing public concern about trash and debris along North Carolina’s roadways, the N.C. Department of Transportation established its Adopt-a-Highway program in 1988. Since then, thousands of volunteers have not only helped reduce litter but also saved North Carolina’s taxpayers millions of dollars annually in roadside cleanup costs. With more than 120,000 participants across North Carolina, Adopt-A-Highway is made up of civic and community groups — including schools, religious, professional and social organizations — as well as individuals and families. We will meet at the Kraft YMCA branch parking lot and a YMCA bus will take all volunteers to the cleanup location nearby and volunteers will work to cleanup the area.

Northwest Cary YMCA presents the Northwest Cary Market on the third Saturday of every month. It is meant to bring awareness to the ongoing efforts to support our community and bring goods and services to our neighbors. There are local vendors, crafts, artisans, food and fun for everyone! Everyone is invited to these free events. Volunteers assist with helping set up in preparation for the market, sign in vendors and meet and greet our guests throughout the morning, or help with breaking it all back down at the end of the market. We have volunteers sharing about volunteer opportunities at our own volunteer booth. And we have volunteers helping engage participants in our Family Program Activities during the Market. It's a fun and lively event to be a part of! If you love to be around people and have a heart to volunteer, a warm smile, and are feeling energized, please join us in assisting with bringing this market to NW Cary!

For 23 years Championship week - full of golf and community events - has provided countless memories for fans and attendees young and old. Golfing legends have walked the fairways of Prestonwood Country Club each year, battling for one of the largest purses on the PGA Tour Champions. This fall, the SAS Championship will near $6 million dollars in charitable giving to support area youth educational initiatives with the YMCA of the Triangle being the host charitable organization. The YMCA is partnering with SAS to run the event, and this year we are providing the Marshal for the Championship. Marshals ensure fair play among all participants as well as safety for spectators, and are stationed at locations throughout the course. YMCA youth swim lessons emphasize water safety, skill and stroke development and are offered year-round for swimmers ages 6 - 12 of all skill levels. YMCA swim lessons emphasize water safety, skill and stroke development. Beginning swimmers are introduced to basic stroke movement and learn how to be more comfortable in the water. More advanced swimmers are instructed in stroke technique, endurance and safety skills. YMCA swim lessons have a low child-to-instructor ratio to ensure plenty of time in the water. Swim lessons and classes are available during the week and on weekends. Parents are welcome to watch lessons from the pool deck. Volunteers are utilized as an extra safety measure during the lessons. This allows the instructor to focus solely on one child at a time while the volunteer maintains safety and boundaries with the remainder of the class on the wall. This includes singing songs with the swimmers, playing games, and generally distracting them between turns.

Teen programs at the Alexander Family YMCA include (1) Y Achievers and (2) Leaders Club. (1) Leaders Club is a nation-wide, year-long leadership-development program for middle and high school teens. The community-service based program helps teens discover their full potential as leaders. This program provides teens with extensive leadership training and volunteer opportunities that support YMCA programs and services to the community. Our goal is to challenge teens to serve the community, and to help them grow in who they are and lead those around them. Leaders Club includes weekly meetings, service and social events, as well as trips throughout the year including rallies, service work weekends, optional spring break trips and Blue Ridge Leaders School. Please note: Positions for this project are limited to those who have registered with the Leaders Club program for the upcoming school year. Another volunteer opportunity within the Leaders Club program is volunteering as an advisor. In addition to teaching teens leadership through service, Leaders Clubs advisors: • introduce teens to all the work the Y does to strengthen community, and • inspire and prepare teens to become future Y leaders. (2) Lightner Y Achievers is a program that helps teens understand and learn who they are at critical times in their lives. The best part of the program? It's a safe haven, a blessing and at the end, teens feel good about who they and everything they can accomplish in life.
